Korean beef or "Bulgogi" is a very popular, traditional Korean beef dish. Thinly sliced beef is marinated overnight in soy, pureed pear, sugar, garlic, fresh ginger, and sesame oil, then pan fried for just a few minutes until crispy on the edges! It is the most flavorful bite of beef you'll ever taste. I serve it in lettuce cups with carrot and cucumber sticks, absolutely DELISH!
Ingredients
  • 2 lbs of flank steak, sirloin or beef tenderloin, thinly sliced (1/8")
Marinade
  • 1 pear, peeled, cored and rough chopped
  • ½ cup of soy sauce
  • 5 Tbs of brown sugar
  • 4 whole garlic cloves, peeled
  • 1 tsp of fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp of sesame seeds
  • 2½ Tbs of sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/ -1/2 cup of scallions for garnish
Instructions
  1. Combine all marinade ingredients in a blender or food processor, blend until smooth.
  2. Add the sliced meat to a large ziplock or glass dish and pour in the marinade. Let sit at least 30 minutes, overnight or anywhere in between.
  3. When ready to cook, let the beef come to room temperature, remove from the marinade and shake off the excess.
  4. In a large heavy skillet, over high heat, add 1 Tbs of vegetable oil and heat until shimmering, add some of the beef in a single layer, cook one minute without stirring, then stir and cook for 3 more minutes. Repeat the process for the remaining beef, adding a little more oil to each batch. To serve, pile the beef on a serving plate and garnish with chopped scallions. Delicious served in lettuce cups with cucumber and carrot strips.
Notes
It's easier to slice the beef if you put it in the freezer for about 15 - 20 minutes first. Or you could ask your butcher to do it for you.
