Bechamel is a classic white sauce that has many uses. It’s found in Croque Monsieur, lasagna, mac and cheese, it’s great over biscuits and delicious over cauliflower! A must-have in your recipe file.
Ingredients:
• 5 Tbs of butter
• 4 Tbs flour
• 4 cups of milk
• 1 large bay leaf, optional
• 2 tsp of salt
• 1/2 tsp of freshly grated nutmeg
Directions:
In a heavy, medium-sized saucepan over low heat, melt butter, add flour and stir until smooth. Over medium heat, cook mixture until it turns a light golden color about 6-7 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat the milk in another saucepan and bring to a boil, add the hot milk to the butter 1 cup at a time, whisking continuously until very smooth.
Add the bay leaf and bring to a boil, then reduce to low and cook for 10 minutes, whisking frequently.
Remove from heat and season with salt and nutmeg. Discard the bay leaf.
