Summer 2016 After the “tainted” compost disaster of last spring, the kitchen garden is flourishing! It is however extremely hot, so watering and keeping the critters from eating everything to find moisture is a struggle, but I have high hopes for the veggie harvest! Looking forward to salsa, canned tomatoes, blackberry preserves and lots of pickles and peppers!
Spring 2015 Spring is glorious this year, lots of rain! The air is perfumed with blooming flowers. Ursi and I got the veggies and herbs in, always fun to dig in the dirt after a cold winter!< Lettuce crop is coming along nicely. So much fun to get the garden ready! Looks like we’ll have lots of blackberries and cherries for preserves, I’m determined to win a blue ribbon at the county fair this year!
We had to start over with tomatoes and peppers! We used some compost that was apparently still too hot and had some sort of bedding materials in it and all of the leaves curled up! So…the new plants are in and we’re back on track! Here come the cucumbers and the bread and butter pickles!
This is our new plan of attack for all of those critters eating our produce. It’s called the”Scarecrow”! It’s a very loud motion activated sprinkler. It’s working like a charm on all but the turtles that just look at it blankly as they crawl by! Maybe this year we can actually pick whole red tomatoes without bite marks!
So…..that compost really had an impact on the tomatoes this year, that coupled with monsoonal rains made for a bad tomato crop! Oh well, these things happen! The good news is that the “scarecrow” works like a champ to keep the deer away!
But all in all not a bad season, we made pickles and preserves and had plenty of blackberries for desserts and sauce. The herbs flourished with all of the rain!
